What is Scientific Illustration?

Those displays you read in museums and zoos? The illustrations in your science textbooks? Scientific illustrators are behind them!

Using visuals to communicate science, scientific illustrations appear in more places than you'd think. When unclear photographs don't quite cut it to relay information, or creatures of ages past aren't available as they were to see first-hand (ie, dinosaurs), illustrations come in handy. They call to attention what is important, depict inner workings of the body or of the earth, and even portray the future.

Even with a computer, the creation of an effective illustration requires the skill, vision and inventiveness of a trained artist. Many scientific illutrators have a knowledgeable background that they build upon to learn about the subject, paying attention to details to provide the most accurate and aesthetically-pleasing illustration.
